Vic: Conner beats Bertrand for first time in 23 years

After 23 years .. America's Cup skipper DENNIS CONNER has finally came up trumps over
his Australian arch-rival JOHN BERTRAND.

In the CMV Volvo Challenge on Port Phillip Bay yesterday .. CONNER narrowly defeated
BERTRAND after a three-race duel.

The rivals are famous for their 1983 America's Cup race .. when Australia shocked their
American counterparts with a sensational win.

The race is regarded as one of Australia's most treasured moments in sailing's history
.. with former prime minister BOB HAWKE encouraging Australians to celebrate .. even during
working hours.

Until yesterday .. CONNER and BERTRAND hadn't raced each other in 23 years.
