Vic: Melb postal workers protest over 'no chair' ban
MELBOURNE, Aug 24 AAP - Australia Post workers will hold a protest in Melbourne todayin support of elderly and disabled staff.
Communications Workers Union (CWU) Victorian branch secretary Joan Doyle said AustraliaPost had introduced a ban on staff sitting down while they served customers which, shesaid, amounted to discrimination.
About 50 counter staff will demonstrate in the city at 11am (AEST) to highlight their cause.
Ms Doyle said many of the workers had injuries or medical conditions which were aggravatedby hours of standing.
"These workers have collectively given hundreds of years loyal service to the public," she said.
"Australia Post in January put into practice a `no-chair' policy and threw the chairsof retail staff into rubbish bins.
"Now they are cruelly trying to force staff who are unable to work standing up theentire time out of a job. This is despite their records of providing 100 per cent serviceto the public.
"Many of these workers have injuries or medical conditions caused or aggravated byendless hours of standing up," she said.
Australia Post was unavailable for comment.
